About A Woman to Know
Since 2015, this newsletter has profiled once-forgotten women from history and shared their stories with thousands of subscribers. Some past issues explore:
Hattie Carthan, “The Tree Lady of Brooklyn”
May Milton, a cancan dancer made immortal in one very special painting
Petronella Oortman, the woman who spent a fortune creating the dollhouse of her dreams
The Red Rose Girls, a collective of lady illustrators from the early 20th century
With a subscription to the newsletter, you’ll also get curated reading lists, original essays and more.

About Julia
I’m a writer living in Brooklyn. For more than a decade, I’ve been reporting on culture, business, gender and the points at which all those things collide. Most recently, I’ve been hosting Apple News in Conversation, Apple News's flagship podcast, and in the past my journalism has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Glamour magazine and more (lots of links on my website if you’re curious!).
My first nonfiction book, The New Rules of Money, hit shelves in 2023. You can find it at your local bookstore.
In 2024, I quit my full-time job to devote myself more fully to freelance writing, working on my novel (!) and better developing this incredible project: A Woman to Know.
