Nearly a dozen different actresses have voiced Betty Boop, perfecting Boop’s babyish singing, cooing banter and, of course, the infamous “boop-oop-a-doop.”
Margie Hines was the first to step behind the microphone for Fleischer Studios. In 1930, the 21-year-old comedienne voiced Betty Boop’s cartoon debut in “Dizzy Dishes,” back when Boop was still styled as a French poodle with the floppy ears. From there, Margie went on to voice other animated characters for other cartoon studios, including Olive Oyl, Popeye’s famously long-limbed girlfriend. Margie even went on to marry Jack Mercer, another voice actor best associated with Popeye and Felix Cat.
